Why Sugar Consumption is a BIG No-No in Lyme Disease

This comes up a lot in the Lyme world. When you start talking about eliminating sugar some people get very defensive. It’s like you are asking them to give up their first born child or a kidney. Why can’t I have sugar? The question should actually be ‘why should I have it?’ Sure it tastes good, but actually sugar has no nutritional value at all – nothing, zilch, nada. It appears to do more harm than good, especially in Lyme disease. Below are some interesting facts about sugar, that will hopefully ‘help’ you determine whether or not consuming sugar is worth sacrificing your health or not.

  1. Sugar feeds spirochetes. Spirochetes are considered parasites, meaning that they must inhabit a host to draw nutrients for themselves, one being glucose to sustain life. This means that the organisms require sugar for their own growth and replication. According to Bryan Rosner’s book ‘When Antibiotics Fail….Lyme Disease & Rife Machines‘ sugar paralyzes the immune system & increases symptoms. He also states that sugar is one of the most counterproductive foods to consume if you have Lyme.
  2. Sugar can suppress your immune system.
  3. Sugar upsets the vitamin & mineral relationships in the body.
  4. Sugar can increase reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can damage cells and tissues.
  5. Sugar can produce a significant rise in triglycerides.
  6. Sugar reduces the body’s ability to defend against bacterial infection.
  7. Sugar reduces high-density lipoproteins (HDL).
  8. Sugar can lead to chromium deficiency.
  9. Sugar interferes with the body’s absorption of calcium and magnesium.
  10. Sugar causes copper deficiency.
  11. Sugar can lead to an acidic digestive tract.
  12. Sugar assists the uncontrolled growth of Candida Albicans (yeast infections).
  13. Sugar can lower the amount of Vitamin E in the blood.
  14. Sugar can decrease the amount of growth hormones in the body.
  15. Sugar increases advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which form when sugar binds non-enzymatically to protein.
  16. Sugar can interfere with the absorption of protein.
  17. Sugar can impair the structure of DNA.
  18. Sugar can impair the physiological homeostasis of many systems in the body.
  19. Sugar lowers enzymes ability to function.
  20. Sugar intake is associated with the development of Parkinson’s disease.
  21. Sugar can increase the size of the liver by making the liver cells divide & can increase the amount of fat in the liver. 
  22. Sugar can increase kidney size and produce pathological changes in the kidney.
  23. Sugar can damage the pancreas.
  24. Sugar can increase the body’s fluid retention.
  25. Sugar can increase constipation.
  26. Sugar can compromise the lining of the capillaries.
  27. Sugar can make tendons more brittle.
  28. Sugar can cause headaches, including migraines.
  29. Sugar can cause two blood proteins – albumin and lipoproteins – to function less effectively, which may reduce the body’s ability to handle fat and cholesterol.
  30. Sugar can cause platelet adhesiveness, which causes blood clots.
  31. Sugar can cause free radicals and oxidative stress.
  32. Sugar slows food’s travel time through the gastrointestinal tract.
  33. Sugar increases the concentration of bile acids in stool and bacterial enzymes in the colon, which can modify bile to produce cancer-causing compounds and colon cancer.
  34. Sugar increases estradiol.
  35. Sugar can slow the ability of the adrenal glands to function.
  36. Sugar can cut off oxygen to the brain when given to people intravenously.
  37. Sugar can cause epileptic seizures.
  38. Sugar can increase systolic blood pressure (pressure when the heart is contracting).
  39. Sugar can induce cell death.
  40. Sugar can increase inflammatory markers.
  41. Sugar turns off the gene that controls the sex hormones.
  42. Sugar can decrease testosterone production.
  43. Sugar causes obesity.
  44. Sugar causes depression.
  45. Sugar is more addictive than cocaine & heroin.
  46. Sugar causes increased heart disease.
  47. Sugar causes Thyroid issues.
  48. Sugar can cause various types of cancer.

I could add a million other ‘bad’ things about sugar, but you get the gist.

Fiber (bran, gums, cellulose, etc)

Prepackaged foods, meals, condiments are FULL of sugars. The best way to eat is fresh and avoiding the above. This is why Dr. Cowden & other LLMDs say eat a ‘white free’ diet. Some of the substitutes that I use are: Stevia, Xylitol (biofilm buster), Quinoa (in place of rice – it’s a seed) and Buckwheat (also a seed – no wheat). Takes some getting used to but it can be done.
